Heidrun Schramm

The tuning of instruments, the pursuit of the exact tone, a process which not only demands patience and endurance, but is also dependent on a variety of factors. The act of tuning, which is usually not part of the music itself, becomes the main focus; subject to a meticulously constructed, musical dramaturgy. Heidrun Schramm’s piece consists of material from separately recorded tunings of four string instruments: cello, viola, double bass, and electric bass. Through each step of tuning, a development within this multi-channel composition derives; ultimately merging the individually captured moments, as well as the respective players’ individual sense of listening. The result is an electro-acoustic composition of tuning, detuning, and unforeseen convergence; in which we hear plucked and bowed sounds, finely modulated pitches, gradual changes within resonances, and the overlapping and mutual transformation of all these single events.
