In 2016 IMA directed its focus on the origins and development of acousmatic sound (from Greek akousma, “a thing heard”). This year’s Artist in Residence Thomas Gorbach, founder of the ACP (The Acousmatic Project) and the Wiener Akusmonium, will examine and explore the origins and development of acousmatics.

This November the first Wiener Akusmonium Festival will take place in St. Pölten, featuring not only the Austrian pioneers of acousmatic music Dieter Kaufmann and Günther Rabl, but also Alex Buck, Thomas Gorbach, Tiago Gati, Electric Indigo, Vánia Dantas Leite, Flo Menezes, Kirsten Reese, Elisabeth Schimana, Heidrun Schramm, Andrea Sodomka, Peter Szely and Mauricio Valdes. The festival will also be accompanied by an acousmatic music workshop organized in cooperation with the FH St. Pölten.
