Maryanne Amacher, born in Kane, PA in 1938, studied at the University of Pennsylvania with George Rochberg and Karlheinz Stockhausen. At SUNY-Buffalo\u2019s Center of the Creative and Performing Arts she initiated her renowned telematic City Links series (1967-79). With Marvin Minsky’s Triadex Muse, she began developing ear tone music in the 1970s at MIT\u2019s Center for Advanced Visual Studies. She collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and with John Cage on two large-scale works. From the 1980s on she developed stagings for her work\u2019s ways of hearing: the Mini Sound Series appropriated the dramatic format of 1980s television serials, evolving over days or weeks; the Music for Sound-Joined Rooms Series explored multiple, overlapping acoustic environments and structure-borne sound. Selections of the sound characters from these series were released on two Tzadik Records CDs. In 2005 Ars Electronica awarded her the Golden Nica. Up to her death in 2009, she taught in Bard College\u2019s MFA program.
