DYI Sound Machines
Tamara Wilhelm

In an open workshop during the Long Night of Museums interested visitors are offered a glimpse into the functioning and construction of electronic sound machines. Simple analogue kits let anyone build their own sound machine and take it home. This workshop is based on such DIY synthesizers as the “Atari Punk Console” or the “Cracklebox”.
No previous knowledge or soldering skills are required; all necessary materials and tools will be provided.

The idea of transmitting, storing, or manipulating sounds with the help of light not only influenced the development of early synthesizers but was also the state-of-the art technology in motion pictures (sound film) until the second half of the twentieth century. In the digital world it made a mighty comeback in abstract form (data transfer and storage) with light-fiber optics and digital storage media. An experiment table supervised by experts invites participants to look at, listen to, and touch the surprisingly simple principles of this technology.

Max Brand left behind a wonderful machine – the Max-Brand-Synthesizer – and lots of unanswered questions about his electronic utopia. Through performances on this machine we immerse ourselves in this utopia.
